FR ↔ EN · Civil law & common law

Not translation.
Equivalence.

Bilingual French/English legal support for firms working across two legal systems — where the risk isn't the words, it's what they mean in each.

The signature problem

The same clause. Two legal effects.

Pick a clause. See how a faithful translation can still carry opposite legal meaning across civil and common law — the gap that survives review and reaches signature.

The divergence:
Why it matters
~72%

of cross-border contract failures trace to misaligned legal frameworks — not mistranslation.

A bilingual contract can be linguistically flawless and still shift legal meaning between civil and common law. Those clauses pass review precisely because they read correctly.

Catching them is a legal judgment, not a language check — the work most translators and generic AI tools can't do. That judgment is what I provide, on a supervised basis, delivered to your firm for sign-off.

What I do

Fixed-scope, supervised back-end capacity.

01

Contract review

Bilingual redline with plain-English risk notes and civil/common-law equivalence flags on every material clause.

02

Drafting

Bilingual or single-language contracts and clauses, engineered to hold their intended effect in both systems.

03

FR → EN summarising

French documents distilled into clear, accurate briefings for English-speaking counsel, fast.

04

Dual-jurisdiction research

Civil and common-law questions answered memo-ready, in either language, with sources.

How it works

Questions

Before you send the first matter.

Are you instructing on your own authority?

No. I provide back-end capacity on a supervised basis. Work product is delivered to the instructing firm, which reviews, adopts and signs off under its own name and responsibility.

How do you handle confidentiality?

Full confidentiality as standard, and I'll sign your NDA or engagement terms before receiving any document. Files are handled securely and returned or destroyed on request.

What's your turnaround?

Standard turnaround is 48–72 hours depending on length and complexity, with rush availability. You get the timeline confirmed at quote stage, before work begins.

Which jurisdictions and languages?

French and English, across civil and common law, with particular depth on the mixed-system and Francophone cross-border context. For matters of local law I work to your firm's supervision and sign-off.

How do we start?

Send one clause for a free equivalence review, or a full document with your deadline for a fixed quote. Either way, you'll see the work before you're committed.
